BEHIND THE BASAL

I’m Macy, founder of The Basal Social. My Type 1 Diabetes journey started during one of the most intense, unexpected moments of my life: while I was training to become a private flight attendant, at the age of 23.

At the time, I was learning emergency protocols, cabin safety, and how to care for passengers thousands of feet in the air…and suddenly I was learning how to give myself insulin and navigate a diagnosis I didn’t see coming. I went from safety drills to carb counting overnight. My training binder was filled with aircraft procedures and now blood sugar logs.

It was overwhelming, isolating, and honestly terrifying. I wondered if my dream career would even be possible anymore. Nobody around me understood what I was going through, and I didn’t know any other Type 1s to ask. I felt like I was living in a different world from everyone else in training, even though we were all in the same room.

But slowly, I learned how to live with it. I learned how to listen to my body like an instrument. I learned how strong I actually was. And most importantly, I learned that support matters more than anything.

That moment, the loneliness of it, is what eventually inspired The Basal Social. I wanted to build something I desperately needed back then: a place to ask questions, to meet people who actually understand, to not feel like you’re figuring it out alone.

Today, I live in San Diego with my dog and kitten, and I’m obsessed with wellness, community, and creating experiences that make people with Type 1 feel seen and supported. Whether you were diagnosed last month or twenty years ago.

This community is for you.

And I’m really glad you’re here. 🩵
